San Francisco has officially transitioned from warnings to fines\u2014marking a turning point in the fight against speeding. As of August 5, 2025, 33 automated speed cameras across the city are now issuing tickets to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11\u202fmph or more. How Cameras Detect Speeding & Capture Drivers<\/h3>\n\n

Each camera is equipped with radar to register vehicles going 11+ mph over the posted limit<\/strong>, then snaps the rear license plate image. There\u2019s no facial recognition<\/strong>, no red\u2011light triggers\u2014just radar enforcement and plate capture. Photos and speed data are sent to Verra Mobility, which validates them in conjunction with SFMTA before issuing a citation.<\/p>\n
